Forty Years Later

(For Autumn)

My heart still pricks me with a silver pin

When suddenly I see that it is you

Whose face I’ve singled out

Amidst a swirl of faces in a crowded mall.

My soul still lifts with wonder

When I wake and feel you near me,

Breathing exquisitely in our darkened room.

My arms still thrill with pleasure

When you fold yourself within them

And the world shrinks down to only you and me.

My life is dumb as gravel if the night comes on

And fingers have not touched your face

Nor eyes have touched your eyes,

Nor ears have heard your sound.

But earth holds hope and laughter

As long as it holds you.
